The zoom lens can change the shooting range by adjusting the focal length without changing the shooting distance, which is very beneficial for picture composition. Since a zoom lens can serve as several prime lenses, when traveling, not only is the number of photographic equipment carried reduced, but also the time spent changing lenses is saved.

The most distinctive feature of a zoom lens, or rather its greatest value, lies in the fact that it enables the focal length of the lens to be changed according to the photographer's will. Unlike fixed focal length lenses, zoom lenses do not achieve the change of focal length by quickly changing the lens. Instead, they do so by pushing, pulling or rotating the zoom ring of the lens. Within the zoom range of the lens, the focal length can be changed stepless, meaning that any focal length within the zoom range can be used for photography. This creates conditions for the diversification of composition.
