Ball lenses are small diameter optical glass beads. Ball lenses have shorter focal length and larger magnification than ordinary convex lenses, and their focal length depends on the refractive index of the material itself. Because the ball lens has a short focal length behind it, which minimizes the distance required from the ball lens to the fiber, the ball lens is mainly used in fiber optic applications.
